Star Rating Reports

Star Ratings have been determined for the National Highway Network of roads in all State and Territories. Some state highways have also been star rated in Victoria and Western Australia. The higher the star rating, the safer the road.

    Star Ratings for the AusLink National Network in NSW

    In this report, you'll find Star Ratings for 18,332km of the AusLink National Network for all States and Territories (except NSW). Of this total length, 2 per cent of the network was rated 2-star (red), 51 per cent 3-star (yellow) and 47 per cent 4-star (light green). There were no 1-star (black) or 5-star (dark green) highway links.

    This report rates Australia's National Network for risk by looking at crashes which have occurred on the network. The focus of this report is Performance Tracking which compares the risk on the network over the two periods (2000-2004 and 2005 - 2009).

    Rating Queensland Highways for Risk

    This report provides risk maps for 4,783km of Queensland's national network highways. The risk maps are based on casualty crashes (where at least one person was killed or injured) on highways generally zoned at speed limits of 90km/h or higher.

    This report provides risk maps for 7,561km of Queensland's rural road network comprising 4,784km of the AusLink National Network (covered in previous studies) and, for the first time, 2,777km of selected sections of State highways.     Comparing Risk Maps and Star Ratings

    This AusRAP Technical Working Paper compares the relationship between Risk Maps and Star Ratings. It shows that the crash rate on a 4 star road is about half that of a 3 star road, and that the crash rate on a 3 star road is about half that of a 2 star road.
