Model History and Safety features

A driver's airbag is standard equipment on all variants. Dual front airbags are standard on the Advance variant.

The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt. Webbing grabbers are fitted to the front seat belts. The centre rear seat has a 3-point seat belt.

During the crash the hazard lights and other emergency mode features activated. The trip computer has a speed alarm.

Overall Evaluation: 3 Stars

The MITSUBISHI MAGNA perform marginally in the offset crash test (score 6.40 out of 16 ). The passenger compartment was substantially deformed. There was a risk of serious chest injury with both the driver and passenger. Protection from lower leg injury was poor for the driver.

The vehicle scored better in the side impact crash (score 11.01 out of 16) but there was a high risk of life threatening chest injury for the driver.

The passenger compartment was substantially deformed in the offset crash test. The front part of the driver's floor was pushed rearwards 200mm and was severely deformed. The brake pedal moved rearwards by 210mm. The dash moved 150mm towards the driver. The roof buckled upwards above the driver and the width of the driver's doorway shortened by 130mm. All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash high manual effort was required to open the driver’s door but the rear door required tools.

The airbag cushioned the head of the driver and contact was stable. Upward steering column movement occurred after the peak of the crash and did not affect airbag performance. The large airbag (designed for the US market) provided extra protection. The steering column shroud is designed to protect the driver's knees from the steering column adjuster mounting bracket. However, the metal arm of the steering column adjuster is a hazard to the driver's left knee. The glove box latch caused a cut to the passenger dummy's leg and an invalid knee displacement reading. The rear seat cushion became dislodged under the child restraints during the crash and could pose of hazard to rear seat occupants.

Modifiers for offset test scores

The score generated from driver dummy data may be modified where the protection for different sized occupants or occupants in different seating positions, or accidents of slightly different severity, can be expected to be worse than that indicated by the dummy readings or deformation data alone. In any single body region, the score may reduce by up to a maximum of two points.

Head No penalty
Chest A-pillar movement 1.32
Upper leg Conc. loading 1.00 L
Lower leg Upward brake pedal movement 0.75

The centre pillar and the side doors were pushed inwards substantially. The driver's seat was pushed sideways but the seat anchorages held. The back of the driver's head glanced the centre pillar then rebounded.

The vehicle was not eligible for a Pole Impact Test since it did not have head-protecting side airbags. This test can earn eligible vehicles an extra two points, giving a maximum possible overall score of 34 points.

Door Opening during the Impact

When a door opens in a side barrier test or a pole test, a minus one-point modifier will be applied to the score for that test. A one-point modifier will be applied for every door (including the tailgate) that opens.

Door Opening Forces after the Impact

A check is made to ensure that the doors on the non-struck side can be opened. The doors on the struck side are not opened.

Pole Test

The vehicle was not eligible for a Pole Impact Test since it did not have head-protecting side airbags. This test can earn eligible vehicles an extra two points, giving a maximum possible overall score of 34 points.

A one point modifier is applied if the head protection airbag does not deploy fully in the designed manner.
